MIKI GOTO’s abstract practice is grounded in Zen philosophy and the act of self-inquiry. Her work centers on the recurring question Who am I?, using abstraction as a space for reflection, awareness, and emotional presence.
Born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in 1980, Goto grew up near Ise Shrine, a spiritual site that continues to inform her understanding of stillness and introspection. Her artistic path is self-directed, shaped in part by over twenty years as a nail artist and consultant, where precision, material sensitivity, and color became essential tools of expression.
Working with acrylic paint, Goto incorporates sand, stones, and traditional Japanese gold leaf to build layered surfaces rich in texture. These materials introduce contrast and movement, reflecting the complexity of human emotion and the balance between light and darkness. Color plays a central role, not as decoration, but as an emotional and conceptual force.
Rooted in tradition yet firmly contemporary, Goto’s work creates a contemplative space. It invites viewers to engage in self-dialogue, recognize individual identity, and consider harmony within diversity.
