Born in Ukraine and now living in Charlotte, North Carolina, Irina Makovskaya has always turned to painting and drawing as a way to make sense of the world.
Her other profession as a medical sonographer has also shaped her perspective—an experience that allows her to see inside the human body and support people in moments of both joy and pain.
These encounters deeply shape her art, which she describes as an allegory for life and a response to social and political events.
Makovskaya’s training began at the Children’s School of Art in 2000, later earning a Master’s in Arts of Education from the Far Eastern Academy of Social and Human Sciences.
She is devoted to pencil portraits and oil paintings that provoke thought rather than provide easy comfort. Each project is carefully chosen, carrying a message that challenges viewers to think, battle, and wonder.
Her art has received international recognition, including awards from Contemporary Art Gallery Online and Art Show International, and has been shown at the Charlotte Art League and the O’Hanlon Center.Last July 2025, she presented her work at the London Biennale and this October in New York City at Agora Gallery, reaching audiences on a global stage.
