Akemi Fujita transforms nature’s forgotten fragments into works of art that feel alive. Trained in oil painting, she later discovered driftwood as her true medium, drawn to its textures, irregular shapes, and the quiet stories it carries from sea to shore.
What began as curiosity has since evolved into an artistic language of playful, endearing sculptures that often gaze back at the viewer with whimsical, expressive eyes.
Her creations are more than objects; they embody a dialogue between the organic and the imaginative, where the natural form of the wood guides each piece’s character. Fujita’s approach reflects both reverence for material and a lighthearted spirit, resulting in works that are simultaneously rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary.
Over the years, her work has been recognized across Japan and internationally, with exhibitions at Ginza Hasegawa Gallery, Ginza Art Hall, and Agora Gallery in New York, as well as multiple solo shows at Salem Gallery, NY.
Each exhibition has revealed Fujita’s gift: the ability to take something weathered and overlooked and reawaken it as something tender, humorous, and full of life.
