Jae Kang Lee

Acrylic painting
Pier 36, New York, NY

Before form takes shape, the tip of the brush breathes.

Memories drawn from the depths of the mind begin to surface.

Standing before the canvas, there is a pause—a breath held in stillness.

At times, the process calls for stepping away, allowing space for play and a return to innocence.

What emerges through intuition must ultimately belong to the self, not as imitation, but as something singular and true.

The brush moves freely, at times playful, at times restrained. This balance between freedom and control shapes each line and gesture, allowing a quiet sense of humor to permeate the work.

Paintings created in 2020, during a time of global uncertainty, are not included in this exhibition, though they remain deeply meaningful.

The work can be understood within the language of modern abstract painting, with an underlying sense of stoicism.

At its core, the practice is driven by a simple aspiration: to be remembered as a sincere and thoughtful painter, and to continue pursuing that vision with honesty and imagination.
