Ed Belbruno

My work strives to reflect the expanse of nature in all its forms, from the Earth to other worlds. Some pieces are realistic, depicting fields of wildflowers in Vermont or landscapes of newly fallen snow with a misty horizon beneath a pale sky and a lone figure. This is a recent series—some of which are exhibited in this expo—created in oil. It reflects my distinct style while remaining grounded in realism, offering a strong sense of mood and connection to nature.

Another series consists of colorful abstract works that suggest orbits moving chaotically through space, created in oil or acrylic. I also developed a black-and-white series between 2020 and 2021 that reflects my feelings about the apocalypse, portraying haunting, lifeless landscapes that still hold a subtle beauty. These are done in acrylic, but without the use of a brush.

In another body of work, I explore the mystical power of the night sky, not necessarily tied to Earth. I also create abstract, expressionist pieces in which paint is applied rapidly—primarily black on white, with small touches of color.

These are just a few of my series. When I paint, I enter a flow state where I lose track of time, as if something else is guiding my hand. At times, I work slowly and methodically with a planned composition; at others, I paint rapidly in an abstract, expressionist manner without any preconceived outcome. I work across a range of mediums, including oil, acrylic, oil pastel, oil stick, and chalk pastel, and I apply paint in many different ways. While I primarily paint on canvas, I have also created works on wood, plastic, and glass.
