My art is sparked by movement and beauty. As a dancer-turned-visual artist, I see the world around me as a mood-boosting dance that I put into paint. I am deeply influenced by the amazing natural beauty that surrounded me growing up on a small Island on Canada’s east coast and by my involvement in visual art, dance, music, and theater from a young age. From these experiences, my motivation as an artist has been steadily fueled by the power of artistic expression to spread joy and bring people together. My work expresses the energy and emotions inspired by interflowing themes of nature, movement, dance, and music. My paintings range from imaginative and colorful, stylized expressions of nature—especially water-related—to purely abstract lyrical pieces. I also work on projects with performing artists whose creativity inspires me, including dancers with and without physical and intellectual disabilities, musicians, and composers.
Based on my love of dance-pop music, Dance-Pop is a series of mood-boosting abstracts that jump off the dance club floor and onto the wall. These paintings express the infectious beat of music centered on love, encouragement, and dancing the night away. Think disco, think trippy lights and high energy. The color spectrum is a nod to the positive, inclusive atmosphere of the disco phenomenon that started in the 70s, which allowed people from all walks of life, especially those in marginalized communities, to safely come together and dance. Titles reference both new and nostalgic inspirations from my dance-pop playlist.
