Yasunori Sakakibara, born in 1967 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, is a famous artist known for work that crosses cultural and geographic lines. He graduated from Tama Art University in 1992 and was inspired by Northern Renaissance masters and Isao Tomita’s Snowflakes are Dancing. Akira Kurosawa’s films have also influenced him as he explores the blend of Western Renaissance painting with Japan’s Buddhist art.
Sakakibara’s travels in Asia, especially Thailand and Kolkata, have shaped his outlook, leading to vibrant cityscapes that reflect diverse cultures. His experience in Guam, where he joined the Festival of Pacific Arts and Crafts, deepened his understanding of multiculturalism and individual expression.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to Buddhist painting, aiming to capture both physical and metaphysical worlds. His art encourages viewers to appreciate the world’s complexity while celebrating personal freedom and individuality.
