Iris Fernández Soto

Collage art

Since her beginnings in painting, Iris Fernández Soto has dedicated herself to combating the invisibility of the indigenous peoples of the extreme south of Chilean Patagonia, such as the native peoples of the Selknam and the Kawésqar. In the works to be represented, her theme is based mainly on showing the weaving of rush, a natural fiber that these indigenous people used to make baskets for daily use and that were mainly used in the collection of shellfish for their food. In addition, in these works, the massacre they suffered is represented with the reddish color, due to the territorial greed of the settlers. The metals; the discovery of the new industrial era and how it replaced the culture of the indigenous people.

Also, all this representation with the collage technique, is composed of natural organic materials extracted from the forests of this southern area. It is noted that this collection of works was presented in the Chilean Antarctic in 2012. Likewise, not only this type of art has been exhibited, but also local landscapes in the premises of the Supreme Court of Santiago de Chile, the Court of Appeals of Punta Arenas, the University of Magallanes in the Punta Arenas, Caza azul del Arte, in the same city and other places.
