Donna Masi

Digital art

The journey to capture the viewer’s interest and evoke an emotional response was, has always been, and will continue to remain the primary focus of my work. With that said, my artistic creed has evolved. I have melded methodology with current technology.

Classical drawings and paintings no longer satisfy my artist’s voice or provide the visceral reaction I want from an audience.

I sensed that my figures and landscapes were becoming too predictable, too static in nature. Experimenting with color, light, and shadow added movement and excitement to my work; it did not create the tension I sought.

The pivotal moment—the driving force—presented itself on the flat screen of an iPad. The brilliant colors and translucency of the projected image were as powerful as they were transformative.

Exit brushes and pencils; enter an iPad Pro. The Procreate app allows a newfound artistic freedom. The images are printed on photo-transparent film. The processes mimic the translucent quality of the flat screen by placing the photo-transparent film onto acrylic blocks.

The first successful step in an ever-evolving process was the creation of imagery. Continual exploration with multilayers of quarter-inch acrylic slabs and individual images led to my most recent creation called ‘Fruition.’ This work reflects the new technique and form I have dubbed “Shadow Dancing.” I have found my voice.
