Britt-Marie Tidemand‘s paintings exude a dark, sensual allure that captivates the viewer. The Swedish artist fearlessly explores the deep-seated emotions in our psyche, infusing her work with intense passion.
Grotesque faces emerge from a pitch-black background, their expressions captured in tormenting grimaces. In contrast, elegant, elongated figures inhabit the center of the canvas, gazing back at us with an enigmatic quality, as if they’ve materialized from a dream. Twisted bodies float amidst a sea of fire, adding to the dramatic atmosphere.
Her color palette is rich and warm, featuring reds, oranges, yellows, and depths of gold, chocolate, and black. The texture is buttery and soft, achieved through the use of oil paint, sometimes blended with sand sourced from the beaches of Gothenburg.
Tidemand also weaves elements of fashion into her art – a passion rooted in her sewing family background and her education in fashion design. Through her work, she compels us to feel, hear, and see at all costs, even if it means dragging us into the flames, overwhelming our ears with screams of agony, or blinding us with beauty.
Tidemand has showcased her work extensively across Scandinavia and in countries such as Italy, Spain, England, and the United States, particularly New York. Her art has been prominently featured at Queen Silvia’s Children’s Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, where it adorned the covers of the hospital’s annual reports for 2009 and 2010 and the research annual report in 2016.
With an MBA and a degree in fashion design, Tidemand has cultivated a diverse skill set. In addition to her painting, she honed her analytical abilities as a CFO before fully dedicating herself to her passion as a full-time artist.
