The essence of my work lies in the exploration of the different physical and cultural identities of people of color, transforming them into abstract expressions on canvas.
As a multiracial African American, the essence of representation has always been of immense importance to me and my style, as well as the tangible and intangible forms it takes.
With that being said, my inspirations for my work are people of color, showcasing their heritage and cultural connections.
Whether my artworks are associated with the diaspora or overseas, focus on hairstyles and adornments, or take on different shapes and forms, the themes of my pieces aim to create storylines that spark meaningful conversations and are built to endure.
With that said, I Adore You (Adoration) tells an unfolding love story between two strangers who have just met and are slowly learning about each other.
As the viewer can see, there are physical and cultural connections between the two.
The male figure represents a combination of African American and Irish descent (African Diasporic representation), while the female figure represents people of Tanzanian descent (direct African descent).
One can also observe the connection between their hair coverings and patterns: it is typical for those of African descent to use durags and caps to protect natural hair. I chose to incorporate that concept into my piece to solidify a cultural bridge.
