Taidg O’Malley

Landscape painting · London & Co. Fingal, Ireland

I’m a landscape artist who, after a career as an architect, has returned to my passion for painting. I work from both Kew, SW London, and Balcarrick Beach, Co. Fingal.

My paintings are inspired by places I’ve been to — not just for their physical beauty, but for something that captured my imagination at the time, such as the colours and textures of the roofscapes of Siena; the sky, sea, and beaches of the Jurassic Coast on the south coast of Devon and Dorset; the rugged landscape of the Wild Atlantic Way on the west coast of Ireland; and the colours of the Lake District in northwest England.

I’m also drawn to the random figure-ground patterns of places such as Siena. Some places truly catch one’s eye — but not everywhere touches one’s soul.

Typically, I’ll see a view that catches my eye and begin to frame or compose it on my camera to see if it captures the essence of the place as I perceive it.

Back in my studio, I start composing by deciding on the overall extent of the painting I have in mind, while also breaking the view down into a series of vignettes.

I then take quite a broad-brush approach — blocking out the colours as I see them and building up each tone by applying layers of different colours, rather than mixing them “off-canvas,” as it were.

By building the paint up in layers, I achieve an effect somewhat reminiscent of Pointillism — combining several layers (rather than dots or dabs) of colour to create the overall tone I’m seeking. This method adds texture and depth to the painting. Working with emulsion paint allows me to capture both the fluidity of watercolours and the richness of oils.

I can vary these effects by adjusting how lightly I roll the paint on and how much paint I load onto the roller initially.
