In her work, Cabell constructs a narrative in which women are uncompromising, unapologetic, and unafraid to take up space. Her figures are rebellious—embodied with confidence and defiance—as they challenge the ways women have been remembered, erased, or misrepresented throughout history.
Each piece becomes an act of reclamation, giving voice to the silenced and asserting presence in spaces where absence once dominated. Her paintings also celebrate the importance of friendship and the grounding, healing force those relationships can provide.
A personal inspiration for this series comes from Cabell’s experience growing up with a mother shaped by the 1950s—a time when women were expected to behave, stay quiet, and place the needs of others before their own.
She witnessed both her mother’s strength and her restraint, the complexities of a woman navigating a world that offered limited choices. This tension—between compliance and rebellion, visibility and silence—deeply informs her work. Cabell’s paintings are, in part, a response to that legacy: a way to honor it, question it, and move beyond it.
Her process is rooted in mixed-media assemblage. She begins by layering the canvas with wallpaper, handmade papers, gift wrap, and fabric—materials historically linked to the domestic or decorative. These textured foundations serve as both setting and subtext.
From this layered surface, she builds her subjects with acrylic, oil paint, and oil stick. The figures emerge from the background—shaped by it, yet breaking free—symbolizing transformation and resistance. Each layer operates as both material and metaphor, revealing how history is not fixed but something we can reimagine, rewrite, and reclaim.
