Tension and intrigue in these works emerge from the juxtaposition of planes, curves, and contrasting colors, and inspiration from the natural world’s structural and aesthetic complexities. There is a term from cosmology evocative of physics and art—curved space— which could describe the combination of curved forms and negative space in my works. 

My education and work experience were in science and engineering, and my artistic work evolved from a synthesis of science and artistic expression. All of this was accelerated by the COVID pandemic. ,

I use an old and familiar design process: model building. Using vellum papers, clay, carving materials, and aluminum, the first steps transform these into intriguing three-dimensional structures. Potential color options are explored, the mounting base design is integrated into the sculpture design, and it is ready for fabrication and finishing.

My design process includes options for working with woods, metals and clear plastics. Materials exhibit unique processing and finishing properties, while the unpainted forms (e.g., copper, bronze, wood ) offer rich contrast to painted ones. Clear materials (e.g. plexiglass) that can be processed with standard woodworking tools yield sculptures with complex reflected images within three-dimensional forms. 

I emphasize quality in the fabrication of the final work of art. This requires advanced tools to support finishing and engineering processes for a diversity of materials, and proper facilities for high-grade painted finishes are essential. Sculptures can be created for both indoor and outdoor display and scaled to a large size.
