Doreen McGunagle

Black-and-white photography

Black and white photography allows me to distill the world to its purest forms of light, shadow, and texture.

In removing color, I invite the viewer to engage with a scene’s essence—the quiet rhythm of a landscape, the enduring spirit of wildlife, or the subtle interplay of structure and atmosphere.

Each image is not only a reflection of what I witnessed but also of the emotions and contemplations that the moment stirred within me.

My process begins with patience in the field, often waiting for the light to shift or for wildlife to reveal itself with unguarded grace. I rely on natural light, careful composition, and long exposures to capture fleeting moments and transform them into timeless works. The black-and-white medium amplifies tonal contrasts and allows intricate details—such as the veins of a mountain, ripples on water, or the gaze of an elephant—to speak with clarity and strength.

Themes of resilience, connection, and the passage of time are prevalent in my work. I am drawn to subjects that embody endurance—ancient trees, eroded dunes, or the protective bond of a mother and child in the wild. These moments are more than visual—they are metaphors for our shared human experience.

Ultimately, my vision is to create images that encourage reflection and reverence. I want the viewer to pause, breathe, and feel both the power and fragility of nature. Through this body of black-and-white work, I seek to reveal not only what I see through the lens, but also the enduring truth that we are part of a larger story written across landscapes and living beings.
