Jason Chu

Abstract painting · Los Angeles, California

Jason Chu is a Los Angeles-born artist whose abstract paintings are shaped by a unique background in athletics, performance, and visual storytelling. Working with acrylic, texture, and geometric forms, he creates compositions that explore the relationship between order and spontaneity, structure and emotion.

Inspired by minimalism, modernist architecture, and geometric abstraction, Chu builds layered surfaces that reveal subtle shifts in rhythm, balance, and movement. His process combines careful construction with intuitive mark-making, allowing each work to develop through both control and experimentation.

Much of Chu's artistic perspective is informed by a life spent in motion. From competing as a gymnast to performing on stage and working in film, he developed an appreciation for discipline, repetition, and the expressive potential of movement. These experiences continue to influence the visual language of his paintings today.

Rather than directing a specific narrative, Chu creates open-ended works that encourage personal interpretation. Through texture, space, and carefully considered forms, his paintings invite viewers to pause, look closely, and discover their own connections within the composition.
