Raised in Greenwich Village by an artistic single mother, my early influences were abstract expressionists like Rauschenberg, Motherwell, and Johns. I discovered painting in a small studio on Perry Street while my mother made large plastic light sculptures. In my early twenties, I explored technology-based mediums, with video and photography becoming my primary art forms. After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Art—now UARTS—in 1975 with a BFA in Film, I focused on building my career and family.
In 2001, at age 48, I was diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer and given a prognosis of five months to five years to live. This led me to close my business and end my twenty-year career, seeking experimental treatments. I found a doctor in Little Rock, Arkansas, with a controversial stem cell transplant protocol. During my recovery, I rediscovered art, using a digital camera and a laptop to photograph liminal spaces and create digital collages.
Digital art was gaining traction, and in 2002, I participated in Pixel Perfect, my first group show in Chelsea, marking a significant moment in the burgeoning field of digital art. This experience reflected my journey and the innovative spirit inherited from my mother. Today, my work continues to evolve through experimentation, using photography as a point of origin and incorporating new technologies.
As I look to the future, I am excited about AI’s possibilities in the art world but remain cautious. The tension between my fear of technology’s potential dangers and my curiosity about its possibilities is where my art most comfortably lies. This tension mirrors my journey with cancer, balancing hope for experimental treatments with the fear of the unknown. My childhood, rooted in a love of experimentation and curiosity, has shaped my art and life, thriving in the space where the unknown becomes a canvas for healing and creation.
