Drew Haynes
Although pragmatic, I am a perpetual optimist. I enjoy capturing special moments and highlighting individuals in my art. I draw inspiration from my time working in musical theater and consider my portraits akin to pivotal moments in plays. Typically, I assign a song to each art piece corresponding to the moment. I enjoy dignifying people when creating portraits while confronting each viewer with the subject’s gaze. I seek to create an energy exchange between the viewer and the subject.
In my practice, I focus on the mid-tones and highlights to create a very light, delicate room for my subject to inhabit. I make my collages using my graphite portraits by mixing features from my renderings and juxtaposing opposing features or using colored hand-made paper and semi-transparent vellum paper. By creating wild and unnatural facial harmonies in my collages, I seek to challenge the notion of balance and facial unity. The other technique augments my subjects’ space and reality, lending more to fantasy.
