Bharat Dalal, the Indian-born artist known for his profoundly realized paintings inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, made a powerful statement this April with his solo booth at Artexpo New York, presented in collaboration with AGI Fine Art. In the early 1980s Dalal left his native India to come to Los Angeles to fulfill his vision of creating something never seen before- oversized, marbled interpretations of da Vinci’s work that, once completed, could never be recreated. Even the method needed to hold the huge canvases as they were painted was something Dalal had to create on his own from scratch, building a complex pulley and rigging system not unlike the scientific inventions and diagrams produced by da Vinci in his lifetime.
