Heather Soos

Painting and scratchboard art

I create highly realistic paintings and scratchboards depicting wildlife. My inspiration comes from a combination of direct observation while traveling and animal photographs taken by my husband. My primary painting mediums are acrylic and oil on canvas or hardboard, and scratchboard. Scratchboard, an ink-coated clay board, entails delicately scraping away ink to unveil the white clay beneath, resulting in intricate black and white imagery. Color is subsequently introduced through the application of tinted inks, enriching the composition, and adding depth to the artwork. Each piece aims to offer viewers a window into nature, fostering connection and reverence. With meticulous attention to detail, I craft immersive compositions that evoke a sense of ‘virtual reality’, inviting observers to cherish and safeguard our natural heritage.
