Stan Unser is a retired physician based in San Antonio, Texas, who began his art practice after retiring from medicine in 2016. Building on his undergraduate training in fine arts, he developed a mixed-media practice centered on storytelling and visual interpretation.
Unser begins with an image that sparks an idea or imagined narrative. He combines multiple images through digital collage, bringing together abstract and figurative elements to create a sense of ambiguity. The composition then moves from photo transfer into mixed media and acrylic, before a final layer of oil paint completes the work.
This process reflects Unser’s interest in creating images that leave room for interpretation. Rather than presenting a single, fixed story, he invites viewers to form their own connections and narratives.
Represented by AnArte Gallery in San Antonio, Unser has exhibited in Texas and New York City. His work has received awards at several Texas venues, and more than half of his completed works are held in private collections across the United States.
