Bud Hambleton developed a sculptural practice shaped by a lifelong connection to nature, observation, and the human experience. Raised in Jamestown, New York, he developed an early appreciation for animals and the outdoors while helping on his grandfather’s farm. His artistic training included drafting and sculpture at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester, where he studied under sculptor William Ehrich.
After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Hambleton returned to Rochester and continued developing his skills in wood, stone, and marble before turning to welded steel. The material became central to his practice, allowing him to create works that balance strength with movement and grace.
His subjects ranged from the human figure and children to animals and abstract forms. Horses, bison, bears, owls, giraffes, and elephants reflect his enduring connection to nature, while his figurative works explore everyday moments, beauty, and human character.
Hambleton exhibited widely throughout the United States and received notable public commissions, including busts of Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer. His work continues to be exhibited and remains part of private and public collections.
