#AgoraArtist Valentin Groell travels internationally, exploring every city to document moments that tell a story with his camera. In this week’s #AgoraUpClose we are able to experience Groell’s process of overlapping and weaving different photographs to create a unique narrative. Colorimetry is as important to Groell as the raw photo itself. Even though editing his photographs, as an artist Groell wants to stay true to the original mood and atmosphere of the image. Groell plays with both figural components or silhouettes as well as the landscape of the city. Lines and gradients are his manner of blurring and outlining important details in his work.

Inspired by the hues and movement of light, artist Holly Grosvenor studies and captures the luminosity of her natural environments. From a young age, Grosvenor was exposed to a continuous routine of sketching trips and observations in the studio, highly influenced by her father, who was also a painter. She is accustomed to working both en plein air and in a studio environment, which creates an intriguing blend of observation and interpretation in her work. Visually exploring the wonders that surround us, Grosvenor fosters a deep appreciation for nature and encourages her audiences to become more aware of their surroundings and enjoy their beauty.

Grosvenor received her B.A. in Environmental Design from Brown University and her M.A. in Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Her studies have shaped the way she perceives her surroundings and how she translates them on the canvas.Some of her recent exhibitions include the Providence Art Club (Providence, RI), the Oregon Society of Artists (Portland, OR), the Portland Rose Festival (Portland, OR), and the Spring Bull Gallery (Newport, RI). “I attempt to capture the casual observation; to hold a passing moment of uncelebrated beauty in reflected light and changing color. Introducing a medium that combines both the world of art and technology, this week’s #StudioSunday is thrilled to present digital artist Alli Gerrish, who creates artwork inspired by her lived experiences during the pandemic.

The lockdown changed our routines both collectively and universally. For artist Alli Gerrish, her studio space suddenly became inaccessible which is how she got involved with digital art. She was able to create images and even animations combining the recordings with voiceover narration and music. The tools and possibilities were endless and it fed her imagination so fruitfully that a new series of works bloomed in response to the pandemic. The medium has allowed Gerrish to combine her visual and cognitive process through mark-making, color, writing, and voicing over her narratives. The technological aspect of her work generates and weaves multiple layers allowing her work to take life and shape in a different manner.

The digital paintings are vibrant and energetic geometric abstractions expressing various emotions that gently connect, overlap, and intertwine. The colors and hidden symbolisms are important to the narrative, for example, the recurrent hourglass in her paintings has come to symbolize herself. Other shapes, forms, and patterns represent both individual and collective vulnerabilities into dreams for a better future, where joy and positivity rule supreme. “I believe in the power of art to help people tap into a universal consciousness of the common joys and fears we all share. Putting paint onto the canvas is a peaceful way to make order out of chaos, joy out of struggle, and to share the beauty that is always found next to the challenge. I find that by exploring the energy of our circumstances, we can use visual language to heal our hearts and minds and hopefully create a source of inspiration for how we would like to move forward in our future.” @alligerrish

With just a few weeks left before his exhibition at the gallery, Giovanni Tresso welcomes us into his studio and allows us to learn more about his process. This #StudioSunday is all about “a moment’s worth of eternity”

Tresso, portrays the individual ‘fingerprints’ of the soul through his study of faces in portraiture, waiting for the single moment to capture the truth behind the eyes of his subjects.

He seeks to understand the unique fabric of each individual and elegantly reveal the beauty of youth or old age that we hide internally. Giovanni Tresso’s process is unique as he takes important steps and builds a bond with his models before entering the studio space. The artist takes his subject out to dinner where he can learn and experience them through conversation, glances, movements, ever so subtly observing patterns and habits in search of the ‘real self’. Afterwards, he studies his subjects from behind the lens taking numerous photographs hoping to record glimpses of spontaneous micro-expressions and body language indicative of their personality. Lastly, he selects a photograph that he believes best represents the aura he experienced at dinner and behind the lens and paints the portrait of his subject on the canvas, playing beautifully with the positive and negative space of his compositions.

One of his biggest challenges is understanding the complexities of each individual’s mind and the relationship each individual has with themselves. “My portraits tell timeless stories. Eyes that stare at whoever stands in front. Faces with different lives, different experiences, different worlds united by the vision of the artist who immortalized and represented them according to his point of view.” @gbtresso
